About Buying Or Renewing An Aircraft Policy

Can I get cover immediately?

Subject to you meeting our eligibility requirements you can arrange immediate cover online. Simply enter your information in a quote, and if you are happy to proceed, complete your purchase via the website.

In most instances this should take less than 10 minutes from when you start a quote.

Can I earn an Introductory or No Claims Discount?

We operate a system which is very similar to how No Claims Discount works on motor insurance. If a new policyholder who has never owned a plane insures with us they start with a 0% NCD allowance, although they may be entitled to a 10% introductory discount if they have been claim free for 5 or more years. So long as there is no claim then over the next 3 renewals the No Claims Discount increases to 12.5%, 15% and 20% maximum respectively.

If a new policyholder joins us who has held an aircraft policy elsewhere and has been claims free then we put them on the level of the NCD scale that they would have been if they had been insured with us over the period. For example a policyholder who held a claim free policy for 2 years would get a 15% discount.

Is there a discount if I insure multiple aircraft?

We give a discount when you insure more than two aircraft with us, with the level of discount increasing the more aircraft you insure.

The discount is awarded immediately on any new policies and then applied to the renewal premium of any existing policies.

What Aircraft do you insure?

While we can provide insurance for a wide range of aircraft, there are some types which we are currently unable to cover, including those which:

  • Are used for hunting, patrol, fire-fighting, the intentional dropping, spraying or release of anything, any form of experimental flying, any form of flying which requires the pilot to hold a current mountain rating and any other use involving abnormal hazard.
  • Have been configured for cargo.
  • Are ‘warbirds’ or amphibious craft.
  • Are owned by someone who does not have a registered UK address.
  • Have a hull value greater than €2.25 million.
  • Are gliders, hot air balloons or UAVs.

However, we do regularly review our acceptance rules so please check back in future if we are currently unable to provide a quote.

How do you decide who you can insure?

We use an automated underwriting system which uses the information you supply when you request a quote to decide whether we can provide cover and if so at what premium. In most instances we are able to provide an immediate decision and quotation.

Occasionally there may be some aspect of the information provided which means the case needs to be referred to an underwriter before a decision on acceptance and premium can be made. In such instances we notify you on screen of the need for the referral and you can then choose whether you want the referral to continue. If you decide to go ahead with the referral, the underwriter will email you once they have reviewed the case and made their decision.

What is a referral?

While we can normally provide an immediate quotation and cover, occasionally there may be some aspect of the information provided which means the case needs to be referred to an underwriter before a decision on acceptance and premium can be made.

In such instances we notify you on screen of the need for the referral and you can then choose whether you want the referral to continue. If you decide to go ahead with the referral, the underwriter will email you once they have reviewed the case and made their decision, usually within 1 business day.

How do I calculate flying hours?

There are two types of flying hours to consider, total hours and hours on type:

Total Hours.
This relates to the total hours a named pilot has logged on this category of aircraft (e.g. helicopter, aeroplane etc.) Note that unpowered glider hours are not to be included when calculating total aeroplane hours but powered glider and microlight hours may be included.

Hours On Type
This relates to the total hours a named pilot has logged on this make and model type (e.g. Piper PA28 is a make and model type, Cessna 150 is a different make and model type etc). Note that hours spent on variants of a model type can be included (e.g. Piper PA28 is a model type and would include hours on a PA28 140, PA28 160 etc).

How long is a quote guaranteed for?

Quotes for new policies or for changes to existing policies are guaranteed for 30 days from when the quote was first entered.

If you are a registered user, your quotes will be displayed in your dashboard for the guarantee period, after which they are deleted.

How do I renew my aircraft policy?

Renewing your policy is simple:

  • We will send you a renewal notification email 21 days before your renewal date.

What do I do if I buy another aircraft?

If you buy a new aircraft then you have two choices:

  • If you purchase the new aircraft on the same day as you dispose of the previous one then you can simply amend the details on your current policy to show your new aircraft. For information on how to do this, click here.
  • If you are keeping your old aircraft, or have yet to sell it, then you should set up a new policy in respect of the new aircraft. For information on how to do this, click here.
